I arenari —— an imaginary laboratory —
created for the SAO festival in Farrera, Catalonia.Built on the remains of a ruin, it is a space where knowledge arises through practice and through the passage of travelers. This laboratory is a meeting place where craftsmen, thinkers, and villagers collectively experiment and learn. Using earth and stones from the surrounding landscape, we write a living manual for the village and its environment. Earth today is a unique material: both ancient and contemporary, innovative and familiar. In some cultures, it symbolizes renewal; elsewhere, it remains deeply connected to daily life. This dynamic tension is the strength of the Arenari — a place for exchange, observation, and rediscovery, where material knowledge, manual work, and technique develop in constant dialogue with lived experience. Through small experiments, conversations, and collective actions, new fluid knowledge emerges. The Arenari links material practice with social ethics and care for the community. It encourages genuine encounters, shared work, and rejects hierarchy and hypocrisy found in art and architecture. The aim is openness, honesty, and fairness. Earth is a shared, meaningful resource.Today, during the SAO festival, Grond Studio will present and read its manifest in the Arenari — inviting everyone to engage with this evolving collective experiment.Arenari means a sandy place or an area characterized by sand in Catalan — a space that evokes both the raw, natural element of sand and the spirit of experiment and exploration.A huge thanks to the entire team at Centre Arte e Natura @farreracan in Farrera for making this project for SAO possible. We are deeply grateful for the wonderful care, healthy and delicious food during our residency.#grondstudio #SAOFarrera #Arenari #livinglaboratory #earthknowledge #manifest #socialethics #communitycare

The Catena rammed earth blocks are made within the Open Structures system, which allows building on any scale — from small installations to large architectural forms.A key feature is the mobile hydraulic press used to produce the blocks. Because it can be transported and used directly on-site, it makes it possible to work with the local soil wherever the project takes place. This method reduces transport, strengthens local identity, and creates a direct connection between material and place. The system encourages circular, sustainable building while remaining playful and flexible — inspired by the simple, familiar shapes of children’s building toys that evoke calm, trust, and creativity.Change the form

The Catena rammed earth blocks are inspired by the playful blocks you often find at a doctor’s office, where children play while they wait. By using that familiar, recognizable shape, they create an atmosphere of calm and security. This doesn’t just help in constructing a physical structure, but also contributes to mental well-being, as people feel more comfortable and safe in such a space. The playful nature of the blocks encourages interaction, collaboration, and creativity, which has a positive effect on the well-being of the users. In this way, building with earth is not only sustainable and circular, but also healing and supportive for the mind.@tempo_gallery

Nieuwe Instituut Rotterdam commissioned OpenStructures for an adaptable interior design of their New Store initiative. Based on our design for the previous edition of New Store 1.0 the existing elements were reused and adapted to fit an experimental hairdresser’s saloon. In collaboration with Studio Jeroen Wand, the former shop elements were adapted and complemented with parts by Grond Studio and transformed into an illuminated mirror and several display cabinets. With the New Store 2.0, which was presented at Milan Design Week 2024, Nieuwe Instituut imagined a store where shopping helps the environment instead of harming it. In this second iteration of the experimental pop-up shop, located at socio-cultural centre Stecca 3, Nieuwe Instituut tested once again alternative forms of exchange. Can a store help our planet to sustain life, instead of just consuming natural resources? Can shopping ever contribute to the regeneration of the living world? Nieuwe Instituut’s New Store 2.0 investigates a new value economy, another step towards such a regenerative scenario. Later this year The New Store will find a permanent place at Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.Shop interior by OS Studio and Jeroen Wand at stecca 3@nieuweinstituut

In Grond Studio, ethics and aesthetics are deeply interconnected, shaping both the creative process and the final output. Ethics influences the studio’s commitment to sustainable design practices, ensuring that every project respects environmental and social responsibilities. Aesthetics, on the other hand, guides the visual and sensory appeal of the work, striving for beauty, harmony, and innovation. Together, these principles create a balance where design is not only visually striking but also conscious of its impact on the world, promoting thoughtful, responsible creativity.🖤

Pentagon shapes out of black rammed earth in the back, being accompanied by Hana & A rough beachwood treebase that will serve as a leg for a future Catena table. In the center you find a true masterpiece. A tabletop out of american wallnut where the small nut is filled with raw earth and being treated with natural linseed oil. Having a beautifull set of Catena legs made out of brussels raw earth underneath.Around you find 4 stools made out of rammed earth dug up & produced in Brussels together with our solid friend rikkert. Using doorframes as a formwork for these pieces, playing to find the right composition.Besides appreciating its solidity after slamming a door or marking your kids’ height evolution, a door frame doesn’t appear to be the most noteworthy of all materials. In collaboration with Rikkert Paauw, the formwork for the rammed earth blocks ‘Edition of 60’ was spiced up with discarded door frames. It adds movement and finesse to the heavy and solid earth. The first 4 pieces were presented @baranzate_ateliersIt just takes an open mind, a detailed eye and nifty hands.@rikkertpaauw 🧡🦧🧡

In case you missed the SuperAdobe earth wall by Vide Terra at our Baranzate booth…VideTerra got the floor for TERRAIUTA at Baranzate. They developed a SuperAdobe wall by sewing upcycled
jute coffee bags into long, tubular bags. Then, after filling the bags with earth, the wall is shaped and compacted.
Adding a layer of clay plaster is the last step. Letting our Berserker earthplaster techniqeu shine on these ethiopian jute.Photos are impressive, the SuperAdobe technique might be even more impressive. This innovative technique is
developed by Iranian architect Nader Khalili. Earth bags are stacked to form walls and the flexible nature of the bags
allows to shape curved or straight walls with ease. The simplicity and accessibility of the materials make this technique
suitable for all kinds of purposes: emergency shelters, self-building structures, domes etc.@videterra 🖤🖤

CATENACatena is a chain of 4 geometrical structures in rammed earth. Connected by a pin, the structures form a modular series that can be shaped and reshaped into an abstract totem or functional elements. The option of turning the 4 structures upside down gives even more possibilities to play around and build the desired chain. As a modular system, Catena fits perfectly in OpenStructures’ system. Catena is compatible with all other structures in the OS_Grid and ready to be incorporated by a community of diverse authors. At the same time, the gravel and sand used for the production of Catena are recycled from construction sites in Brussels. It implies that Catena is not only a happy part of the OS_Grid but also that the material in itself contains the OS_Design Principles of circularity and re-use.Catena’s sober geometrical structures give full exposure to the rammed earth: its texture, its density, its granularity. The tactile surface in soft earth colours draws our attention but hides a relentless fact: rammed earth is extremely hard, solid and heavy. By compressing (“ramming”) a loose earth mix of clay, sand and gravel up to the point it can’t get any denser, we end up with a material whose characteristics are comparable with concrete. But the story of rammed earth goes further...Besides an object that you can feel, lift up, shape and reshape, Catena wants you to reconnect with earth. As such, building a Catena is a kind of touch base with the forgotten earthen material, symbolizing the potential of raw earth - - not as a substitute but as a powerful, healthy and extremely ecological alternative for contemporary construction and design. The gorillas of Grond studio love play & vivid collors.
